History of Moonrose

Moonrose- Which is now a unique gift store, has a long and varied history. It has been known as the John & Lupe Combs house since 1878. As well as a residence, it has housed a general store, a post office and even a jail house in the back yard.

The building's most famous inhabitant was a dark-eyed lady named Modesta Avila, who in 1889 decided that the railroad was trespassing, and attempted to block their right of way with what "some said" was a line of wash. In spite of the fact that the obstruction was removed, Modesta was arrested and died in prison for this "heinous" crime.

"Spanky" Moonrose,

the famous residence cat,

enjoys his public while

someone sits on the old

porch and writes their

feelings on a carefully

chosen card.
